Studying Aggregation

Leveraging Asymmetry

My intent with this project was to bring out the character of highly differentiated geometries using a singular material expression. I wrote code that traced the topography of our coastal site in Ventura, CA and extruded areas with the highest natural elevation into otherworldly towers. A series of vignettes illustrate my aggregation algorithm’s capacity to weld competing shapes to one another and to locate unexpected habitable space. Everything my scripts generated had to be structurally sound and 3D printable for the project to work.

Corduroy Concrete

A secondary goal of the project was to draw out highly varied surface textures using a singular aggregation algorithm. Using C#, I was able to corrugate my concrete material so it consistently altered its texture according to the orientation of each base plane that it modifies and displaces. Coherent interiors emerged from different scales of concrete ribs abutting one another.

Iterative Aggregation

Over the course of the project, I continued to generate objects using my aggregation script. As more and more objects came into being, I began to locate collisions of form and texture that could become habitable space. A sectional understanding of my experiments led me further down the rabbit hole.
